SANBS Warns of Falling Blood Stocks as Supply Comes Under Pressure

JOHANNESBURG, 23 October 2026 – The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is calling on eligible South Africans to donate blood as national stocks decline to 3.9 days’ cover, below the five-day minimum target. SANBS needs 3,500 units of blood every day to meet patient demand, but current collections are falling short.

With the festive season fast approaching, the declining supply raises concerns about SANBS’ ability to maintain adequate stocks during a period when demand remains high. Every day, patients rely on blood transfusions for life-saving surgery, complications during childbirth, cancer treatment and emergency care which highlights the need for a reliable blood supply.

Some regions are facing even greater pressure, with blood stocks below three days’ cover. Group O blood is particularly important in emergencies when there may be limited time to establish a patient’s blood group before a transfusion is needed.

“The current blood supply is under significant pressure, and we need the public’s support to rebuild stocks ahead of the festive season. We are appealing to active donors, lapsed donors and eligible South Africans who have never donated before to make time to give blood. Every donation counts and can help save lives,” says Monique Schreiner, Senior Manager: Donor Relations at SANBS.

SANBS encourages eligible donors to make blood donation a priority rather than postponing it until later in the year. Whether preparing for a holiday or returning to their usual routine, donors can help ensure that blood is available for patients who need it.
